The Program
- All incoming freshmen at Utah State
University who will attend the Logan campus in Fall 2015 and
Spring 2016 can participate.
- River Trip (August 18 to
22, 2015)
Fellows will undertake a 5-day/4-night trip to collect field data on a nearby section of the Bear River as a member of an 8 to 12 person team. The team will include other Fellows like you, graduate student mentors, USU faculty, and river guides. Fellows will learn how to measure and observe river flows,
river stage, stream bank vegetation, and relief. We will travel by canoes and tent camp near the river each night. The USU Outdoor Recreation Program will guide the trip.
- Fellows will return from the trip to USU in time to start the University Connections course (USU 1010).
- Paid and for-Credit
Research Experience
(Fall 2015)
After the river trip, Fellows will undertake a paid and for-credit research experience for undergraduates (REU) during which they will work in small teams to learn and use geographical information systems (GIS), spreadsheet (such as Excel), and database programs to compile, analyze, and synthesize data collected during the river trip. Fellows will meet weekly with the programdirector and faculty mentor, Dr. David E. Rosenberg plus a graduate student mentor to plan weekly work and report on progress. Fellows will work 3 additional hours per week (more if you desire) to complete weekly tasks. To get credit for work, Fellows will also register for 1 unit of ENGR 1500 (CRN # TBD) led by Dr. David E. Rosenberg. We will schedule work and meeting times at the beginning of the semester to accommodate class, extracurricular, and other responsibilities.
- Continued Research
Experience (Spring 2016) -
Fellows will continue their paid, for-credit REU through the Spring 2016 semester. Additionally, Fellows will present the results of their research at one or more conferences such as the USU Spring Runoff Conference or Undergraduate Research Forum. See example presentations by Fellows.
- Participants must commit to participate in
the 1-year program and register for 1 unit of ENGR 2930
in Fall 2015 and 1 unit of ENGR 2930 in the Spring 2016.
- Continued Participation - There is also the opportunity to continue paid research through Summer and Fall 2016.
